Lavapiés fue en la Edad Media el barrio árabe y judio situado fuera de las murallas de la ciudad de Madrid. Cuando fueron expulsados en 1492, Lavapiés se convirtió en el barrio popular por excelencia de Madrid. En la primera mitad del siglo XX el barrio había caido en decadencia, y no fue hasta los años 80 y 90 cuando se puso de moda entre la gente joven y artistas. Entonces comenzó un proceso de renovación que hoy continua y que ha revalorizado la zona. Es un barrio con un alto nivel de población inmigrante, lo que, junto con su carácter bohemio y alternativo, lo convierte en el barrio más multicultural de Madrid.
